The Operational Service Medal (OSM) for Iraq and Syria is awarded to British Armed Forces personnel who served on Operation Shader from 9 August 2014 onwards. The medal recognises service in air operations, ground support, training missions, and intelligence roles across Iraq, Syria, and surrounding regions.
The medal is circular and made of silver. The obverse features the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription “ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FID DEF”. The reverse displays the Union Flag encircled by “FOR OPERATIONAL SERVICE” and four directional points, flanked by the emblems of the Royal Navy, Army, and Royal Air Force. Recipient details are engraved on the rim. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”.
The ribbon has a sandy tan base with vertical stripes of light blue, dark blue, and red. These represent the operational environment and joint forces: RAF (light blue), Royal Navy (dark blue), and Army (red).
The OSM for Iraq and Syria reflects modern joint operations in a high-threat theatre. It honours professionalism, precision, and commitment in combatting terrorism and restoring stability in the region.
