The Operational Service Medal (OSM) for the Democratic Republic of Congo is awarded to British Armed Forces personnel who supported Operation Coral in 2003. This operation involved a short-term deployment to Bunia as part of a European Union peacekeeping force under a UN mandate.
The medal is circular and made of silver. The obverse shows the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription “ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FID DEF”. The reverse features the Union Flag with the inscription “FOR OPERATIONAL SERVICE” and directional points, flanked by service emblems. Recipient details are engraved on the rim. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”.
The ribbon is light blue with stripes of dark red, navy blue, and green. These colours represent the joint services and the terrain of the region. No clasp is issued with this version of the medal.
The OSM for the Congo recognises the UK’s contribution to international peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. It represents service in dangerous and politically complex environments under multinational command.
