The Operational Service Medal (OSM) for Afghanistan is awarded to British Armed Forces personnel who served in Afghanistan from 11 September 2001 onward. Qualifying periods of service vary by operation, with clasps issued for specific campaigns such as Operation Herrick and Operation Fingal.
The medal is circular and made of silver. The obverse features the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription “ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FID DEF”. The reverse displays the Union Flag with the words “FOR OPERATIONAL SERVICE” and four directional points, flanked by emblems representing the armed forces. The rim is engraved with the recipient’s details. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”.
The ribbon has a broad sand-coloured background with a central red stripe flanked by dark navy blue and light blue stripes. These colours represent the Afghan landscape and the three military services: Army (red), Navy (dark blue), and Royal Air Force (light blue).
The OSM for Afghanistan represents commitment, bravery, and service in one of the UK’s longest and most complex military operations. It honours those who operated in high-risk environments in support of peace and security efforts.
