The Operational Service Medal (OSM) for Sierra Leone is awarded to British Armed Forces personnel who served in Sierra Leone or its surrounding region between 5 May 2000 and 31 July 2002. It recognises contributions during Operation Palliser, Operation Barras, and related stabilisation efforts.
The medal is circular and made of silver. The obverse features the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription “ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FID DEF”. The reverse shows the Union Flag surrounded by the inscription “FOR OPERATIONAL SERVICE” and four cardinal points, flanked by operational theatre emblems. The medal is suspended from a decorative scroll bar and engraved with the recipient’s details on the rim. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”.
The ribbon features vertical stripes of jungle green, navy blue, scarlet red, and light blue. These represent the terrain of Sierra Leone and the joint service elements: Navy (dark blue), Army (red), and Air Force (light blue).
The OSM for Sierra Leone honours dedication, cooperation, and operational excellence during peacekeeping and combat support missions in challenging conditions.
