The Air Efficiency Award was instituted in 1942 to recognise long and efficient service by part-time officers and airmen of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and the Air Force Reserve. The Elizabeth II version was awarded from 1952 onwards, bearing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
Awarded to commissioned officers and non-commissioned members of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, Air Force Reserve, and eligible Commonwealth air forces who completed a minimum of ten years of efficient part-time service. Wartime service, where applicable, was counted as double towards the qualifying period.
The oval silver medal features the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, surrounded by the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F.D.. The reverse depicts an eagle in flight encircled by a laurel wreath, symbolising skill, vigilance, and service. The medal is suspended from a distinctive eagle-shaped bar.
The ribbon is dark green with a central light grey stripe, representing the colours of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and the dedication of its members.
