The Imperial Service Medal (ISM) recognises long and meritorious service by members of the civil service in the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth. Instituted in 1902, it was awarded upon retirement to those in non-managerial or industrial grades who had dedicated their careers to faithful service. The Elizabeth II version reflects a modernised design while continuing the tradition of honouring decades of commitment.
Awarded to retiring civil servants in support or manual grades who completed a minimum of 25 years of meritorious pensionable service. Shorter qualifying periods applied for service in India before independence or in designated unhealthy climates. Recipients were nominated by their departments and the award was announced in the London Gazette.
The circular silver medal, 32 mm in diameter, bears on the obverse the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F.D.. The reverse features a classical male figure resting after labour, surrounded by the inscription FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE. Each medal is impressed on the rim with the recipient’s name.
The medal is suspended from a ribbon of three equal vertical stripes — crimson, dark blue, crimson — symbolising loyalty, duty, and the service of the Crown.
