The Efficiency Decoration (ED) was instituted in 1930 to recognise long and efficient service by officers of the Militia, Volunteer, and Territorial Army units in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. The Elizabeth II version has been issued from 1953 onwards, featuring the Queen’s Royal Cypher on the obverse.
Awarded to commissioned officers who have completed a minimum of 12 years of efficient service in part-time military forces. Wartime service is counted as double towards the qualifying period. Clasps are awarded for each additional six years of qualifying service.
The decoration features an oval gilt metal and silver wreath of oak leaves surmounted by the Royal Crown. At the centre is the intertwined Royal Cypher of Queen Elizabeth II (EIIR). The medal is suspended from a bar bearing the word AUSTRALIA for Australian recipients.
The ribbon is dark green with a central gold stripe, continuing the traditional colour scheme that symbolises the service and dedication of part-time military officers.
