The Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) is awarded to officers and, since 1993, all ranks of the British and Commonwealth air forces for acts of courage, skill, or devotion to duty while flying in active operations against the enemy.
The medal is a silver cross flory with straight arms, overlaid with aeroplane propeller blades between the arms. The obverse features the royal cypher of the reigning monarch at the centre, surmounted by a crown. The reverse is plain and engraved with the recipient’s name and details. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”. It is suspended from a straight silver bar decorated with laurel.
The ribbon is white with broad diagonal stripes of purple. The striking pattern signifies gallantry in the air during active operations.
The Distinguished Flying Cross honours exceptional flying skill and bravery in combat. It represents courage under fire and dedication to duty in the most demanding aerial missions.
