The Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) 1914 was awarded to officers of the Royal Navy and later extended to officers of other Commonwealth naval forces. It recognised gallantry during active operations at sea, particularly in the face of the enemy. Originally introduced in 1901 as the Conspicuous Service Cross, it was renamed in 1914.
The medal is a silver cross with rounded ends and a central circular medallion. The obverse features the royal cypher of the reigning monarch. The reverse is plain and engraved with the recipient’s details. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”. It is suspended from a straight bar bearing laurel spray.
The ribbon is white with dark blue edges. The simple colour scheme symbolises naval tradition and service at sea.
The Distinguished Service Cross honours naval officers who display courage, leadership, and composure in combat or under enemy threat. It reflects distinguished conduct in the challenging conditions of naval warfare.
