The Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) was awarded to non-commissioned officers and other ranks of the British and Commonwealth air forces. It recognised courage, skill, and devotion to duty while flying in active operations against the enemy. The award was discontinued in 1993, when all ranks became eligible for the Distinguished Flying Cross.
The medal is circular and made of silver. The obverse features the crowned effigy of the reigning monarch. The reverse displays a seated Athena Nike (Victory) placing a laurel wreath on the head of a kneeling airman. Recipient details are engraved on the rim. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”. The medal is suspended from a straight silver bar.
The ribbon is white with broad purple diagonal stripes, matching the design of the Distinguished Flying Cross, signifying bravery in aerial combat.
The Distinguished Flying Medal represents exceptional performance and bravery by enlisted aircrew in combat. It honours skill and dedication under pressure during hostile flying missions.
