The medal is a nickel-silver modified cross with flared arms. The obverse features the Crown of St Edward above a central Federation Star surrounded by stylised flames or rays. The reverse is plain and engraved with the recipient’s name. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”. The medal is suspended from a bar topped with the Crown of St Edward.
The ribbon is silver-grey with a broad central red stripe. The red signifies the dangers of warlike service, while the silver-grey reflects professionalism and leadership under pressure.
