The Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) – Civil Division is awarded for distinguished service of a high degree to Australia or humanity. It recognises outstanding achievement in areas such as government, industry, health, education, law, science, and the arts.
The insignia is a gold-plated, flat disc shaped like a stylised wattle blossom. At the centre is a blue enamel ring with the word “AUSTRALIA”, surrounding a gold wattle motif. It is surmounted by the Crown of St Edward. Civil Division awards do not include the crossed swords device. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”.
The ribbon is royal blue with a central gold band. Unlike the military version, it has no yellow edges. The colour represents excellence, integrity, and national service.
The AO – Civil Division honours sustained, distinguished contribution to society. It represents leadership, innovation, and national influence across professional or community life.
