The Netherlands War Cross, sometimes referred to as the Dutch War Cross (Oorlogskruis), was instituted in 1944 by Queen Wilhelmina to recognise acts of bravery, leadership, and exceptional service in combat during the Second World War. It was awarded to both Dutch and Allied personnel who distinguished themselves during military operations against the Axis powers.
Awarded to members of the Netherlands Armed Forces and Allied forces for gallantry, meritorious leadership, or notable service in battle during the years 1940–1945. The award could be granted for a single act of bravery or for sustained distinguished service in the field.
The bronze cross pattée features a central medallion with the left-facing profile of Queen Wilhelmina, surrounded by a laurel wreath and the inscription KONINGIN WILHELMINA • GOD ZIJ MET ONS (“Queen Wilhelmina – God Be With Us”). The four arms of the cross bear the letter “W” for Wilhelmina.
The ribbon consists of a wide central orange stripe flanked by green stripes, representing the national colours of the Netherlands and symbolising courage, loyalty, and honour.
