The George Cross is awarded to civilians and military personnel for acts of the highest bravery in extreme danger. It is the highest civil decoration in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth and ranks equally with the Victoria Cross. It recognises heroism outside of direct combat, including bomb disposal, rescue, or acts of self-sacrifice.
The medal is a plain silver cross. The obverse features St George slaying the dragon in the centre, surrounded by the inscription “FOR GALLANTRY”. The reverse shows the recipient’s name engraved in capital letters. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”. The medal is suspended from a plain silver bar.
The ribbon is dark blue. The colour reflects solemnity, dignity, and the civilian nature of the award. When worn by military personnel, a miniature silver rosette is attached to the ribbon.
The George Cross represents courage of the highest order, often in life-threatening situations away from the battlefield. It honours those who risk their lives to protect others, showing outstanding bravery and sacrifice.
