The Meritorious Service Medal (Australia) was awarded to recognise long and valuable service by members of the Australian armed forces. Originally a British award, it was adopted for Australian service personnel in 1902, with the George V version issued from 1911 until 1936.
Awarded to warrant officers and senior non-commissioned officers for long and meritorious service, typically after a minimum of 21 years of exemplary conduct. Recommendations were made by commanding officers and approved by the Governor-General.
The circular silver medal features the crowned effigy of King George V on the obverse with the inscription GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:. The reverse bears the inscription FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE in four lines, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The medal is suspended from an ornate scroll-type suspender.
The ribbon is crimson with two narrow central black stripes, a distinctive colour combination representing the Australian issue of the Meritorious Service Medal during the reign of George V.
