The Meritorious Service Medal (Australia) recognises long and valuable service by members of the Australian armed forces. Originally a British award, it was adopted for Australian service personnel in 1902, with the Elizabeth II version issued from 1953 onwards.
Awarded to warrant officers and senior non-commissioned officers for long and meritorious service, generally after a minimum of 21 years of exemplary conduct. Recommendations were made by commanding officers and required approval by the Governor-General.
The circular silver medal features the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse with the inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F.D.. The reverse bears the inscription FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE in four lines, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The medal is suspended from an ornate scroll-type suspender.
The ribbon is crimson with two narrow central black stripes, continuing the traditional colour scheme of the Australian issue of the Meritorious Service Medal.
