The Malta George Cross 50th Anniversary Medal was issued in 1992 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the award of the George Cross to the island of Malta. This prestigious honour was granted by King George VI in April 1942 in recognition of the bravery and resilience of the Maltese people during the intense Axis bombing campaign of the Second World War.
The commemorative medal was awarded to surviving veterans and civilians who served in or contributed to the defence of Malta during the siege of 1940–1943, as well as to organisations and individuals who took part in 50th anniversary events in 1992.
The circular silver-coloured medal features the coat of arms of Malta within a wreath of laurel, with the year 1992 inscribed below. The suspension bar is decorated with a sprig of olive leaves, symbolising peace and remembrance.
The ribbon is deep blue with a central vertical stripe of red bordered in white, reflecting the colours of the George Cross ribbon and the national flag of Malta.
