Eligibility

The George Medal is awarded to civilians and military personnel for acts of great bravery. It recognises courageous conduct that does not meet the threshold for the George Cross but still involves significant personal risk and selflessness, often in emergency or life-threatening situations.

Design

The medal is circular and made of silver. The obverse features the crowned effigy of the reigning monarch. The reverse displays St George slaying the dragon, with the words “THE GEORGE MEDAL” inscribed around the edge. Recipient details are engraved on the rim. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”. The medal is suspended from a straight silver bar.

Ribbon

The ribbon is crimson with five narrow blue stripes. The red signifies courage and sacrifice, while the blue represents loyalty and service.

Symbolism
