The Air Force Medal (AFM) was awarded to non-commissioned officers and other ranks of the British and Commonwealth air forces. It recognised exceptional courage, leadership, or devotion to duty while flying, not involving active combat operations against the enemy. The award was discontinued in 1993, when eligibility for the Air Force Cross was extended to all ranks.
The AFM is an oval silver medal. The obverse depicts Hermes, the winged messenger of the gods, mounted on a hawk in flight and bestowing a laurel wreath. The image symbolises speed, service, and achievement in aviation. Recipient details are engraved on the rim. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”. The suspension is an ornate scroll with outstretched wings.
The ribbon is white with narrow diagonal red stripes. The dynamic pattern symbolises movement and flight, distinguishing the medal as an award for flying service outside combat.
The Air Force Medal represents bravery and skill in non-combat aviation roles. It honours those who perform with excellence under pressure, often in dangerous or critical situations that require precision and calm.
