Description

The Military Medal (MM) is a British military decoration awarded to non-commissioned officers and other ranks of the British and Commonwealth armed forces for acts of bravery during active operations against the enemy. Established in 1916 during World War I, the Military Medal was awarded in subsequent conflicts until its discontinuation in 1993. The EIIR version of the Military Medal features the royal cypher of Queen Elizabeth II and was awarded from 1953 until the medal's discontinuation.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Military Medal, personnel must be non-commissioned officers or other ranks of the British or Commonwealth armed forces, including the Army, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, and other military organizations. The medal is awarded for acts of bravery during active operations against the enemy, typically involving direct enemy engagement or other life-threatening situations. The Military Medal is awarded on the recommendation of superior officers and approved by the sovereign or their representative.

Design

The Military Medal EIIR is designed as a circular, silver medallion featuring the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, surrounded by the inscription ""ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FID. DEF."". The reverse of the medal displays the royal cypher of Queen Elizabeth II (EIIR) at the center, with the phrase "For Bravery In The Field" inscribed underneath, surrounded by a laurel wreath. The laurel wreath symbolizes victory and achievement. The medal is suspended from a plain silver suspension bar with a single-toe claw.

Ribbon

The ribbon of the Military Medal features a symmetrical pattern of vertical stripes of dark blue, white, and red.

The Military Medal EIIR is a symbol of the exceptional bravery and dedication of non-commissioned officers and other ranks of the British and Commonwealth armed forces who have displayed outstanding bravery in action against the enemy. It is a testament to their courage, commitment, and selflessness in the face of adversity and serves as a reminder of the extraordinary acts of valor that may be called upon in the defense of their nation and its values.
