The Military Cross (MC) GVI was awarded to commissioned officers and, later, warrant officers of the British and Commonwealth forces for acts of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy. Issued during the reign of King George VI, it continued the recognition of frontline bravery established during World War I.
The medal is a silver cross with straight arms. The obverse features the royal cypher “GVIR” (George VI Rex Imperator) at the centre, with the Imperial Crown on each arm of the cross. The reverse is plain and engraved with the recipient’s details. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”. It is suspended from a plain silver bar.
The ribbon is white with a central deep purple stripe. The bold contrast reflects courage, sacrifice, and distinguished service under fire.
The Military Cross GVI represents gallantry and leadership in combat. It honours those who showed exceptional courage and presence of mind in dangerous battlefield conditions during World War II and other operations of the era.
