The Cross of Valour (CV) is awarded to civilians or military personnel for acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme peril. It is Australia’s highest civilian bravery decoration and may be awarded posthumously.
The medal is a gold cross with flared ends, enameled in red. At the centre is the Commonwealth Coat of Arms surrounded by the inscription “For Valour”. The reverse is plain and engraved with the recipient’s name. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”. The medal is suspended from a decorative bar.
The ribbon is deep magenta with a central blood-red stripe. The colour symbolises sacrifice and courage in the face of life-threatening danger.
The Cross of Valour honours individuals who risk their lives to save others or prevent catastrophe. It stands as a national symbol of the highest level of selflessness and bravery.
