The Australian Sports Medal was established in 2000 to recognise the outstanding achievements and contributions of Australians in the sporting arena. Awarded to athletes, coaches, sports scientists, administrators, and officials, the medal celebrates both elite performance and dedicated service at all levels of Australian sport. It was part of the national commemorations marking the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Awarded to individuals who had achieved significant sporting success, represented Australia at a high level, or made a notable contribution to the development and support of sport. This included volunteers, support staff, and those whose work behind the scenes helped athletes reach their potential. Both current and past contributions were recognised, with approximately 18,000 medals awarded.
The circular nickel-silver medal features the Australian Coat of Arms on the obverse, surrounded by the inscription AUSTRALIAN SPORTS MEDAL. The reverse displays a stylised design of Australian sports imagery, including athletes in motion, symbolising the diversity of sports across the nation. The recipient’s name is engraved on the rim.
The ribbon is 32 mm wide with a central band of green flanked by gold stripes, representing Australia’s national sporting colours. The design reflects the energy, pride, and unity of Australian sport.
