The Air Force Cross (AFC) is awarded to officers and, since 1993, to all ranks of the British and Commonwealth air forces. It recognises acts of courage, leadership, or devotion to duty while flying, but not during active operations against the enemy.
The medal is a silver cross with wings extending from each arm. The obverse features the royal cypher of the reigning monarch at the centre, surrounded by a laurel wreath and surmounted by a crown. The reverse is plain, engraved with the recipient’s details. Replicas are marked with the word “COPY”. The medal is suspended from a straight silver bar.
The ribbon is white with broad purple diagonal stripes. The striking design reflects the distinction of the award and the unique nature of non-combat aviation duties.
The Air Force Cross honours skill, bravery, and professionalism in military aviation. It highlights the crucial role of air force personnel in training, transport, and support missions, often carried out under hazardous or demanding conditions.
