The 80th Anniversary Armistice Remembrance Medal was instituted in 1998 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended the First World War on 11 November 1918. This medal recognises the surviving Australian First World War veterans and honours their service and sacrifice during the Great War.
Awarded to all surviving Australian veterans of the First World War as of 11 November 1998. The medal was presented as part of the nation’s tribute to those who had served during the war, acknowledging their role in one of the most significant events in Australian and world history.
The circular nickel-silver medal features the Crown of King George V above the word ARMISTICE, surrounded by the inscription 80TH ANNIVERSARY 1918–1998. The reverse bears a Federation Star above a laurel wreath, with the words LEST WE FORGET.
The ribbon consists of a broad central black stripe flanked by red and white stripes, representing the sombre remembrance of sacrifice (black), the blood of those who fell (red), and the hope of peace (white).
