The Civilian Service Medal 1939–1945 recognises the vital contribution of Australian civilians who served in organisations supporting the nation’s war effort during the Second World War. Established in 1994, the medal honours those who worked under arduous conditions in a manner similar to military service, helping to keep Australia’s defences, infrastructure, and essential industries operating throughout the conflict.
Awarded to members of eligible civilian organisations who completed at least 180 days of service between 3 September 1939 and 2 September 1945. Service could include work in units such as the Australian Women’s Land Army, Civil Constructional Corps, Red Cross Emergency Service Companies, and other approved wartime support bodies.
The bronze medal features the Southern Cross on a field of golden wattle, representing the unity and spirit of civilian volunteers. The suspension bar bears the words CIVILIAN SERVICE above a Federation Star.
The ribbon consists of a central red stripe flanked by wide pale green bands. The colours symbolise the lifeblood of the nation—red for the sacrifice and dedication ofSPECIFICATIONS:
