To be eligible, recipients must have rendered outstanding service in connection with Australian Antarctic expeditions. This includes scientific researchers, expedition leaders, logistics personnel, and support staff who operate in harsh and remote Antarctic conditions. The award is not limited to Australian citizens but is primarily focused on Australian expeditions.
The Antarctic Medal is circular and made of nickel-silver. One side features a stylised map of Antarctica with the words “For Outstanding Service in the Antarctic”. The reverse shows the Commonwealth Coat of Arms and the inscription “Australian Antarctic Medal”. The medal is engraved with the recipient’s details. Replicas are engraved with the word “COPY”.
The ribbon is white with pale blue edge stripes. The white symbolises the vast Antarctic ice, while the blue represents the surrounding Southern Ocean. The clean, simple design reflects the purity and remoteness of the Antarctic environment.
The Antarctic Medal represents dedication, endurance, and exceptional contribution in one of the world’s most demanding environments. It is a national symbol of appreciation for those who advance Australia’s interests and scientific efforts in Antarctica.
